As for Chicken, to play competitive pvp mesmer, you have to have insane timing, well planned cast, learn to undercast, and more importantly, learn to be one of the most sought after dead targets next to monk, which is a lot of pressure in any real top tier pvp situation. that means knowing how to kite to a pro level, and still cast what and where you need to cast, making you shutdown spread out party wide, aiding spikes, and interupting key skills.
if you didnt know that or can't do it, you can't play mesmer, and therfore, will always think you're just as good as a good mes player. i've been playing mes since early proph in both pve and pvp, and i'm no where near as good as some of the top GvG mesmers of past and present, so maybe actually make a mesmer, and try to play it good, then we'll talk.

Why make a mesmer to try and play it good, and at best be a mediocre addition to the team?

Kinda not talking about PvP here, since we all know Mesmers are useful in PvP.

Simple question: Mesmer worth it?
Simple answer: If you feel like making one, yes. End of discussion.
PvE is easy, and any class can beat it. The debates about efficiency are retarded, since efficiency matters little in pve because it was designed to be beat by any class. Viability is a non-issue because the game is easy. If you find a mesmer not viable in pve, then you fail at the game (for those that have issues with reading comprehension, note I said viable, not optimal).
Now if you want to make a thread about how great necros are, go to the necro forum and stroke each others egos there.

There is one reason why I made a mesmer, and it starts with an "A" and rhymes with farmer.

Kaelyn is right. If you like it play it, if not: don't. Pretty simple, eh? And now for a picture:
